St. Paul AME Church in St. Augustine Celebrates 150th Anniversary with Community Festival

Betty Nelson, David Nelson, and Alma Melvin members of the St. Paul AME Church The St. Paul A.M.E. Church in St. Augustine is celebrating its 150th anniversary in style with numerous events on the calendar, and at the St. Paul AME Community Festival, more than 20 vendors and several food trucks came out to join in the celebration. St. Paul African Methodist Church in St. Augustine was founded in 1873 by Reverend Richard James, and in 1904 it moved to its current location. The church is located in Lincolnville, an area founded by formerly enslaved people, and it was a big part of the St. Augustine Civil Rights Movement. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. spoke at the church in 1964 before one of the Civil Rights marches, and Jackie Robinson spoke in the church as well. Alma Melvin has been a member of St. Paul's A.M.E. in St. Augustine for almost 20 years. St. Augustine High School Football Team State Championship Motorcade Comes Through Town

The Johnson Family in West Augustine supports the SAHS Yellow Jackets Football Team. Today was a day of celebration in West Augustine despite the recent tragedies still heavy on the hearts of so many in the community. Today was about cheering on and celebrating the young members from the community, who are headed to Tallahassee for the State Championship as a part of the St. Augustine High School Football team. Willie Mae Chambers supporting the 2023 SAHS Football Team at the Florida State Championship Game Motorcade in St. Augustine All along West King Street, family members, St. Augustine High School alumni, and supporters of the St. Augustine High School football team joined in to cheer on the team, as the Yellow Jackets motorcade led by the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office left St. Augustine High School and drove through town passing Sebastian Middle, heading down US1, and then going through the west side community nearby two of its feeder schools the Webster School and R.J.

More Than 200 People Come Together for the MLK Day of Service Event in St. Augustine

Something special happened in St. Augustine today. MLK Day of Service has become a movement in St. Augustine, it has become a day for individuals, families, and organizations to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement in St. Augustine, and it has become a day that joins people together from all walks of life about a purpose greater than themselves.
