Plein Air St. Augustine Paint Out - Artists Become Part of the City

St. Augustine Plein Air Paint Out

Once a year artists from across the country adorn the streets of St. Augustine as a part of the Plein Air St. Augustine Paint Out hosted by the St. Augustine Art Association.

The painters become a part of the St. Augustine landscape, as they sit in their chosen location and focus on the subject in front of them.

Patricia Domanski from Daytona Beach had chosen a small courtyard at the Lightner Museum, where she enjoyed the quiet morning hours.

Local painter Heather Harley-Davidson had set up in front of the St. Augustine Marina, where she was painting the O.C. Whites Restaurant on Avenida Menendez across from her. She had learned from past plein air experiences, so she had brought a beach umbrella along to paint comfortably.

David Tarbert is participating in the Plein Air St. Augustine Paint Out for the first time. He had chosen a location on Cadiz Street, where he could paint the sunflowers in front of the Ximenez-Fatio Museum.

What does Plein Air mean? "En plein air" is the French expression for "in the open." Plein Air is when the painter leaves the studio to experience painting and drawing in the landscape. Plein Air painting is a practice that goes back for centuries but it was made into an art form by the French Impressionists.

The Plein Air St. Augustine Paint Out event takes place from April 26th - 30th, and you can learn more about the event at the St. Augustine Art Association
